Phyllis Liu, OD, FOVDR

Dr Liu has been in practice for over 30 years.  She is a graduate of University of Pennsylvania and the New England College of Optometry.  She received a 4-year Fellowship from the Gesell Institute at Yale University where she learned about developmental optometry which studied children and was later expanded to adults.  Her specialty is unique and very specific to behavioral optometry and neuro-optometry, which is for traumatic brain injury and stroke in adults.  She is a Fellow of College of Optometrists in Visual Development having taken exams in behavioral optometry.

Spanning over her 30-years’ experience she has helped hundreds of patients from infancy to 100 years old – children and people with binocular problems and who experienced traumatic brain injuries including concussions, strokes, and brain tumors.  She has a passionate commitment in helping our military Veterans.  She has received an award from Senator Blumenthal for her service to the veterans.  She also receives referrals for patients needing rehabilitation so they may be able to drive and patients with disabilities such as reading problems, torticollis, cerebral palsy, MS, autism and who have lasting effects from COVID.

Dr. Liu works with her patients one on one rather than with a therapist. By doing so she develops a connection with each patient that allows the patient to grow and accomplish the results they set out to achieve more efficiently. Because she is passionate about the care she gives to her patients, she expects the patient and, in some cases, the child patients’ parents/legal guardians to commit to wanting results.  Exercise equipment is part of the treatment plan.  It is very important for the eye exercises to be done at home in between the visits to Dr. Liu.  It is the combination of Dr. Liu’s desire to help the patient and the patient’s desire to get better that results are achieved.

Not only has Dr. Liu spoken at conferences in Connecticut and Oregon, she is a member of the Program Committee for Northeast Congress of Optometry which she was moderator at the 79th and 80th NEC Annual Conferences.  Dr. Liu, a Fellow of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development, is the COVD coordinator for the state of Connecticut, and, as a member of the Optometric Extension Program Foundation, she is the OEP coordinator for the states of Connecticut and Rhode Island.
